William Henry Johnson papers, 1865-1965 (bulk, 1865-1875)

Consisting of two letters, 24 Feb. and 6 Apr. 1865, written from near St. Stephens Depot [Berkeley County, S.C.] and near Smithfield, N.C. to his sister, "Lina," re his duties destroying ammunition in anticipation of the evacuation of Charleston, rumors reaching him about the capture of Columbia, S.C., "One says that the Enemy passed through without stopping; another that it was burnt. The former seems the most authentic and, I think, the most probable... it is not likely that the inhabitants were molested," the fall of Richmond and his concern over current location of the Trenholm famly, meeting a man who had passed the Prestons on the way to York, S.C., and the fact that not being able to wash during marches makes him look "like the Yankee prisoners in the bull-pen." Also including notice from the Diocese of South Carolina, 8 Jan. 1875, announcing that Johnson had been deposed "from the Holy Ministry"; and letter, 23 Jan. 1965, from Brigadier General Robert E. Coffin, grandson of William Henry Johnson, to E.L. Inabinett, sending a biographical sketch and enclosing the Civil War service records of Benjamin Joseph and William Henry Johnson.
